UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein in Essen

Tourism, Holidays & Nature

Europe's largest former coking plant is today the living symbol of the Ruhr region as UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein.

Here in North Essen one can discover interesting new sides of this impressive icon of industrial culture. History comes back to life and working and living with the coal becomes almost tangible. The road passes through the authentically preserved above-ground buildings. Besides the impressive architectural style "New Objectivity," one sees the technology and work in the most beautiful and once largest and most productive coal mine in the world. From the shaft plant where the coal entered, through the way through the screening plant to the processing and loading in the coal washing plant. The traces of miners are discovered and the way they worked and lived is revealed. The Ruhr Museum is also located at Zollverein.
