Open Air Museum Hagen

Tourism, Holidays & Nature

On the southern edge of Hagen town, where the first hills of the Sauerland loom, the LWL Open Air Museum Hagen is nestled beautifully in the wooded Bachtal: the land museum for crafts and technology. It transports visitors to a bygone world, to another time. In the more than 65 historic buildings, the purest craftsmanship, there are the most diverse workshops. Some of them are exhibited there, but what is really special about this museum is that in a third of the workshops people work every day. The craftsmen show and explain how the tools and machines of more than a century ago were used. In addition to guided tours, the open-air museum entices walks through the attractive landscape with beautiful views.

The LWL Open Air Museum Hagen transports visitors to a bygone world, to another time. In the more than 65 historic buildings, the purest of craftsmanship, are the most diverse workshops. Some of them are exhibited, but what is really special about this museum is that in one third of the workshops work is done every day. The craftsmen show and explain how the tools and machines of more than a century ago were used. During their exciting outing, visitors experience how glowing iron was forged into sickles or nails in the fire, how paper was made from oval wooden tubs, or how thick cloth was created from thin yarn. Also at the other work sites such as the tobacco house, the bakery, the goldsmith, the barber or the portfolio workshop, the craftsmen are "at work" every day.

Apart from the activities and guided tours, the open-air museum tempts visitors to stroll through the attractive landscape with its magnificent views, to do some shopping in the nostalgic stall shop or to enjoy a snack in the Museum Terraces restaurant.
