Mine Nachtigall. Cradle of the Ruhr

Exhibitions & Museums

almost 300 years ago, this first coal mining in Zeche Nachtigall was the basis of the creation of the Ruhr region.

You go back in time, when for the extraction of the black gold, horizontal mining galleries were spared in the slopes before the first shafts entered the depths. Equipped with helmet and miner's lamp, you will reach a real coal seam via low passages. In the exhibition around the underground shaft "Hercules," learn about the technology and harsh working conditions of miners in the 19th century. In the engine room, one of the oldest lifting machines in the Ruhr is running. In the information center Geo- Park you will learn about the soil history of the Ruhr area through multimedia presentations and objects.
