The Ruhr region is hosting a festival with a slightly different twist. This year, twelve vacant postwar churches serve as the backdrop for Manifesta 16 Ruhr.
The cities of Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, and Bochum in the Ruhr region will host the biennial, which aims to promote social engagement and positive change through inclusion and participation. The events, which involve artists, community initiatives, and other creative individuals, focus on the historical, architectural, and social reconstruction of the Ruhr region in the postwar period.
