This compact annual brochure Nordrhein-Ruhr Topevents presents the tourist and cultural highlights of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and has been published since 2010. This German federal state is comparable to the Netherlands in terms of area and population: NRW has 18 million inhabitants and covers almost the same area. The region offers an impressive natural landscape with a national park and 14 nature parks. In addition, NRW has 29 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, with Cologne as the metropolis of millions.
In 2024, NRW broke tourism records again. The number of overnight stays rose to about 54.5 million, of which 9.1 million were in the Ruhr region. The number of guests also reached a new high at 24.5 million, of which 4.6 million were in the Ruhr region. This growth is mainly due to the increase in foreign visitors, with the Netherlands remaining the most important origin market. One of the most popular attractions in the region remains the World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen, which attracts 1.7 million visitors annually (Source: IT-NRW).
