More than 45,000 participants, with more than 70 different nationalities, from 11 years to 90+, come to Nijmegen every year to walk for four days 30, 40 or 50 kilometers in the Waal city and its beautiful, wooded surroundings. All with the same goal: the coveted 4Daagse cross.
1909: The very first starting shot
The 4Daagse dates back 115 years. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1909, the starting gun sounded for a walk that would become The Walk of the World. The idea to walk for four days came from a military man. The goal: to build up fitness among soldiers. A total of 296 soldiers and ten civilians set off from ten barracks over no less than fifteen courses.
The 2025 walking four-day event is from Tuesday, July 15 to Friday, July 18.
